Articles
• ‘A, An तथा The’ को Articles कहा जाता है।
NOTE :- वास्तव में ये Demonstrative Adjectives हैं। आधुनिक Grammar में इन्हें Determiner कहा जाता है और इनका प्रयोग साधारणतः Countable तथा Common Noun, Singular Number के पहले होता है। जैसे —
1. I am a student.
2. He bought an elephant.
3. This is the book I want.
Types of Articles
• Articles दो प्रकार के होते है —
1. Definite Article
2. Indefinite Article
1. Definite Article
• ‘The’ को Definite Article कहा जाता है, क्योंकि इनसे किसी खास व्यक्ति अथवा पदार्थ का बोध होता है। (It points out some particular person or thing) जैसे —
1. I have lost the pen that you gave me.
2. The thief was taken to the Police-Station.
3. The cow is a useful animal.
4. The lion is called the king of beasts.
2. Indefinite Article
• A तथा An को Indefinite Articles कहा जाता है, क्योंकि इनसे अनिश्चित व्यक्ति अथवा पदार्थ का बोध होता है। जैसे —
1. Seven days make a week.
2. A donkey is a beast of burden.
3. He bought an elephant in the Sonepur fair.
4. My brother is an S.D.O.
NOTE
• A/An का शाब्दिक अर्थ एक, सब, प्रति, प्रत्येक, के हिसाब, से, कोई, पर होता है। जबकि The का कोई शाब्दिक अर्थ नहीं होता है। इसका functional meaning (अर्थ) होता है।
• A or An Adjective ‘one’ का कमजोर रूप (weak form) है, जबकि The, Adjective – This, that का कमजोर रूप है।
• Consonant Starting Nouns के पहले The का प्रयोग हो, तो उसे ‘द’ पढ़ा जाता है, जबकि Vowel Starting Nouns के पहले The का प्रयोग हो, तो उसे ‘दी’ पढ़ा जाता है। लेकिन Nouns पर जोर डालने के लिए ‘The’ को ‘दी’ पढ़ा जाता है, चाहे Nouns Consonants or Vowels से स्टार्ट क्यों नहीं हो।
Position of Articles
Rule (1) :– A/An/The + Noun. जैसे –
1. I have a book.
2. He has an umbrella.
3. The cow has a tail.
Rule (2) :– A/An/The + Adjective + Noun. जैसे –
1. She is an intelligent girl.
2. Monika has a long stick.
3. Tendulkar is the best player.
Rule (3) :– A/An/The + Adverb + Adjective + Noun. जैसे –
1. She is a very intelligent girl. (✓)
2. He is the very best player. (✓)
3. He is very the best player. (x)
o Note :– The very का अर्थ ‘वही’ होता है। इसका प्रयोग Noun पर जोर देने के लिए किया जाता है। जैसे – This is the very girl. (यह वही लड़की है।)
Rule (4) :– Such/What/Many/Rather/Half + A/An + Noun. जैसे –
o Such a girl. (✓)
o What a fool. (✓)
o Many an inkpot. (✓)
o Rather an idea. (✓)
o Half an hour. (✓)
o Many books. (✓)
