SECTION-A

1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below in your own words :

Once a poor woman came to Buddha. She implored him to give her any medicine to restore her dead son to life. The great teacher decided to pacify her by making her feel the hard realities of life. He asked her to bring handful of mustard seeds from any house where death had never entered. At one the sorrowful mother went from door to door for the mustard seeds. At one place a girl said, ‘I have lost my father’. At another place a man said, ‘My young son passed away last night’. The woman returned with a heavy heart to Buddha after hearing similar tales of sorrow form every house. Buddha, the great teacher, consoled her, ‘My daughter’, one who is born is sure to die. So you must stop shedding tears and perform the last rites of your son.

2. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below in your own words :

One day some people saw two women named Kamla and Leela quarrelling fierecly over a baby. The people took the women and the baby to the court of two wise king, Vikram. Kamla told the king that the baby was hers. Leela also claimed the baby as her own. King Vikram patiently heard the two women, thought over the matter for a few minutes and then said to one of his officers. ‘fetch me a sowrd’. The officer brought him a sword and then the king said”. Divide the baby into two and give half to the one and half to the other. At this Kamla began to cry bitterly and said, “Oh! My Lord, please don’t kill the child. Let Leela have it.” But Leela said, It shall be neither mine nor hers, divide it, King Vikram, pointing to Kamla said, “Give her the child, she is the mother of it”, and ordered Leela to be sent to prison.”

11. Read the extract carefully and answers the following questions :

During the course of my indispositon, he would sit near my head on my pillow and gently stroke my forhead and hair, and his moving away was like the going away of a nurse or attendant!
When I used to work during summers afternoons, Gillu would abstain from going outside or sitting in his swing. To keep him-self close to me and also to tackle the summer heat, he had discov ered a totally new method. He would lie prostrate on the ‘Surahi’ kept near me and thus remain both close to me as well as be cool!

But my point is that most of my fellow-patients in the cinema do think fast enough to keep up comfortably with rapid changes of scene and action. They think much faster than people did thirty years ago: possible because those who do not think fast in the high street now a days may not get another chance in this world to think at all.
