SECTION-A

Discipline is the necessity of life. A man without discipline can achieve nothing worth-while in life. Discipline is a very im-portant condition of progress, stability and strength. Discipline is necessary in every walk of human life. Without discipline there will be disorder and lawlessness. In a civilized society we cannot live without having some regard for the welfare of other. Respect for authority is the basis of discipline. Children must obey their parents. In schools and colleges there must be discipline. Other-wise education will suffer. We find evidence of discipline all around us, even in the world of nature and the world of animals. Discipline costs nothing but it wins a lot. Discipline helps us to safeguard our interests and retains us from misusing our liberty.

2. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below in your own words :

The Kaurava’s maternal uncle, Shakuni was adept at gambling which was very popular in those days in the society of big people. Duryodhana invited Yudhishthira to play the game. The latter being a pure hearted and simple person was quite inexperi-enced in it. Dice after dice was cast with the result that Yudhishthira lost his entire kingdom and his wife Draupadi as well. At this the evil hearted Duhshashana, a younger brother of Duryodhana, rag-ged her to the assembly hall and began to pull off her sari in the presence of her husbands and the large number of courtiers. At this hour of peril Draupadi closed her eyes and stood praying to Lord Krishna with folded hands to protect her modesty. Lord Krishna at once came to her rescue. Duhshashana went on pulling off the sari for hours and still he was not able to come to the end of Draupadi’s sari.

11. Read the extract carefully and answer the following questions :

Dr. Rajendra Prasad was born on 3rd December, 1884 at Jiradei, in the district of Saran in Bihar. The name of his father was Mahadeo Sahay. His mother was Kamaleshwari. Devi. At the age of five, he studied Persian with a Maulavi and then joined Chapra Zilla School. He was married to Rajvanshi Devi at the age of twelve. After passing Matriculation, he was admitted to Presi-dency College, Calcutta in 1902. He passed all the University examinations with credit. He always stood first. he became a law-yer at the Calcutta High Court. In 1916 he joined Patna High Court. He participated in the Champaran Movement of Mahatma Gandhi. He served as a President of the part in 1932, 1934, 1939, 1942. He was the Chairman of India’s Constituent Assembly also. When India became free in 1947 he was elected first President of the Indian Union.

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was born in 1931 in Rameshwaram in Madras. He had three brothers and one sister. His ancestral house was built in the middle of nineteenth century. The Second World War broke in 1939 when Abdul Kalam was just eight years old. Abdul Kalam passed the Elementary School from Rameshwaram After that he went to Ramanathapuram for study. He did the B.Tech in Madras. He worked for two decades in ISRO and mastered Launch Vehicle Technologies. He played a very important role in build-ing indigenous Prithvi and Agni Missiles. He also worked as a Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister. He won many awards in-cluding the Padma Bhushan in 1981, Padma Vibhushan in 1990 and Bharat Ratna in 1991. The nation honoured Dr. Kalam by electing him the 11th President of India in 2002 to 2007. Dr. Abdul Kalam died on 27.07.2015 at the age of 83.
