Nalanda was an ancient centre of higher learning in Bihar, India. it is located in Bihar about 75 miles south-east of Patna. It was a Buddhist centre of learning. Nalanda was called one of the first great universities in History. Some buildings were constructed by the Aryan Emperor Ashoka the Great. The complex was built with red bricks and its ruins occupy an area of 14 hectares. The university attracted scholars and students from as far away as China, Greece and Persia.
