INTRODUCTION
Born in the village of Bisapi in Madhubani, on the eastern side of north Bihar. Vidyapati is well known for depicting the pangs of separation in the well-known tradition of Jayadeva. His love-songs re-create and reveal the world of Radha and Krishna, the major love figures of Indian mythology and literature. However, while Jayadeva’s poem celebrates Krishna’s love and pays comparatively little attention to Radha the woman, Vidyapati is primarily concerned with the intense passion of Radha’s love. At once sensuous and sensual, descriptive and dramatic, Vidyapati’s songs range beyond the mythological only to find their place in the heart of a human lover whose dreams and desires never die, whose sighs and cries never end. The present poem is in the form of a report from a friend of Radha to Lord Krishna. The Lord has had no occasion to meet Radha for sometime. The young girl took this to heart. Consequently. her health began to fail. Greatly concerned over this condition of Radha, the anonymous friend runs to Lord Krishna to report this.
उत्तर बिहार के पूर्वी भाग में मधुबनी के बिसापी गाँव में जन्मे विद्यापति, जयदेव की सुप्रसिद्ध परंपरा में विरह वेदनाओं के चित्रण के लिए विख्यात हैं। उनके प्रेम-गीत भारतीय पौराणिक कथाओं और साहित्य के प्रमुख प्रेम पात्रों, राधा और कृष्ण के संसार का पुनर्निर्माण और प्रकटीकरण करते हैं। हालाँकि, जहाँ जयदेव की कविता कृष्ण के प्रेम का गुणगान करती है और राधा पर अपेक्षाकृत कम ध्यान देती है, वहीं विद्यापति मुख्यतः राधा के प्रेम की तीव्र भावना पर केंद्रित हैं। एक साथ भावात्मक और भावात्मक, वर्णनात्मक और नाटकीय, विद्यापति के गीत पौराणिक कथाओं से परे जाकर एक ऐसे मानव प्रेमी के हृदय में अपनी जगह बनाते हैं जिसके स्वप्न और इच्छाएँ कभी नहीं मरतीं, जिसकी आहें और क्रंदन कभी समाप्त नहीं होते। प्रस्तुत कविता राधा की एक सखी द्वारा भगवान कृष्ण को दिए गए एक वृत्तांत के रूप में है। भगवान को कुछ समय से राधा से मिलने का अवसर नहीं मिला था। युवती ने इसे हृदयंगम कर लिया। परिणामस्वरूप, उसका स्वास्थ्य बिगड़ने लगा। राधा की इस स्थिति से अत्यधिक चिंतित, वह अनाम सखी भगवान कृष्ण के पास यह वृत्तांत सुनाने दौड़ी।
THINNER THAN A CRESCENT
Her tears carved a river
And she broods on its bank
Hurt and confused,
You ask her one thing,
She speaks of another.
Her friends believe
That joy may come again
At times they banish hope
and cease to case.
O Madhava,
I have run to call you:
Radha each day
grows thinner
Thinner than the crescent in the sky.
SUMMARY
In this poem, the poet gives a poignant portrayal of Radha’s separation and pain. Radha’s tears form a river, and she sits on its banks, immersed in sadness. She is so lost in grief and confusion that when asked one thing, she says another. Her friends sometimes hope that Radha will find happiness again, but then they give up all hope. In the end, the poet calls out to Madhava (Krishna), saying that Radha is fading day by day, like the crescent moon thinning in the sky—this reflects the depth of their love and separation.
इस कविता में कवि ने राधा के विरह-भाव और पीड़ा का अत्यंत मार्मिक चित्रण किया है। राधा के आँसू एक नदी का रूप ले लेते हैं, और वह उसी के किनारे बैठकर उदासी में डूबी रहती हैं। वह दुख और भ्रम में इतनी खो गई हैं कि कोई एक बात पूछे तो दूसरी बात कहती हैं। उनके मित्रों को कभी लगता है कि राधा में फिर से आनंद लौट आएगा, पर कभी वे सारी आशा छोड़ देते हैं। अंत में कवि माधव (कृष्ण) को पुकारते हुए कहता है कि राधा दिन-ब-दिन क्षीण होती जा रही हैं, जैसे आकाश में पतली होती हुई चाँद की अर्धचंद्राकार रेखा — यह उनके प्रेम और विरह की गहराई को दर्शाता है।

Answer :– Radha’s friend became sad to see her falling health and pathetic mental condition. She realised that she had immense love and devotion for Lord Krishna and his separation was unbearable to her. So her friend went hurriedly to Lord Krishna and narrated all about her. As reported by her, she was so much miserably spending her day and night. Her tears had turned into a river. She was hurt and confused sitting constantly there. She had almost lost her sense. She didn’t understand what other people say and even what to tell them. She did repeat continuously her Lord’s name. (राधा की सहेली उसके गिरते स्वास्थ्य और दयनीय मानसिक स्थिति को देखकर दुखी हो गई। उसे एहसास हुआ कि भगवान कृष्ण के प्रति उनके मन में अपार प्रेम और भक्ति है और उनका वियोग उनके लिए असहनीय है। तो उसकी सहेली जल्दी से भगवान कृष्ण के पास गई और उसके बारे में सब कुछ बताया। जैसा कि उसने बताया था, वह बहुत ही कष्टपूर्वक अपना दिन-रात काट रही थी। उसके आँसू नदी जैसी धारा बन गई थी। वह लगातार वहां बैठे-बैठे आहत और भ्रमित थी। वह लगभग अपना होश खो बैठी थी। उसे समझ नहीं आता कि दूसरे लोग क्या कहते हैं और उन्हें क्या बताना चाहिए। वह बार-बार अपने भगवान का नाम दोहराती रहती है।)
