INTRODUCTION

POLYTHENE BAG
‘Hurt’ is such a strange polythene bag
which never gets
dissolved into the earth’s crust
When touched it makes a squeaky noise,
when burnt it exudes a pungent smell,
when left to itself
it pollutes the environment.
Just like the polythene bag
his ‘hurt’ too melts down
with a little touch of warmth.
But deep inside the grief’s garbage bin
far away from everyone’s gaze
the germs of the disease
keep on growing.
The polythene bag
remains buried within
Only the pain caused by the ‘hurt’
keeps coming back
again and again.
SUMMARY
In this poem, the poet compares “hurt” to a polythene bag. Just as polythene doesn’t dissolve in the soil, human suffering doesn’t easily disappear. It stings when touched, emits a pungent odor when burned, and pollutes the environment when left unattended—just as mental suffering contaminates life. A little warmth or compassion may temporarily melt this sorrow, but it always lurks in the deepest recesses of the mind. There, it slowly grows, like germs of disease breeding in garbage. Finally, the poet says that this pain may not be visible from the outside, but deep within, it always remains, tormenting the mind repeatedly.
इस कविता में कवि ने “hurt” (आघात या दुख) की तुलना पॉलीथीन बैग से की है। जैसे पॉलीथीन मिट्टी में घुलती नहीं, वैसे ही मनुष्य का दुख भी आसानी से मिटता नहीं। उसे छूने पर चिरचिराहट होती है, जलाने पर तीखी गंध आती है, और छोड़ देने पर वह वातावरण को प्रदूषित करती है — ठीक वैसे ही जैसे मन का दुख जीवन को दूषित कर देता है। थोड़ी सी गरमाहट या संवेदना से यह दुख कुछ समय के लिए पिघलता जरूर है, परंतु मन के गहरे कोने में यह हमेशा छिपा रहता है। वहाँ यह धीरे-धीरे और बढ़ता जाता है, जैसे कचरे में बीमारी के कीटाणु पनपते हैं। अंत में कवि कहता है कि यह दर्द बाहर से भले ही दिखाई न दे, पर भीतर कहीं गहराई में हमेशा बना रहता है और बार-बार मन को पीड़ा देता है।
